We move our bin inside and outside every year (5 years running). I can't see what zone you are in, but if there were a way to wait until more critters (like soldier fly larve and such) have hatched and flown the coop, it would be a smoother transition. Also getting rid of mites from your worm bin using the outside sun would be a good indoor move prep. Below is a link for some tips on how to get rid of mites easily.

Once inside, keeping a cover over the materials for the first month or so (like coir or chopped newspaper) will help eliminate some of the hitchhikers!

Another possibility, if you don't mind the hassle, is to harvest the worms in your current bin, clean it out, and start afresh indoors. You can even give the worms a quick rinse in non-chlorinated water if you're really worried about outdoor beasties. I did this with a can-o-worms last winter and it worked great- no critters. Depending on how many worms you have, you may want to leave the remains of the undigested food in a container outdoors with a few worms to finish composting.

thanks for the ideas. i'll make a game-time decision about whether to bring the bin in after my last VC harvest in the fall. i'm also considering leaving the bin outdoors with some insulation (i live outside NYC, so it gets cold, but not terribly cold).
