I often see advice to keep annual MG's on the dry side and not to fertilize, (that they like poor soil), but I really think it depends on your definition of "poor soil". In our hot, dry Mediterranean climate of Central California I find that my MG's like quite a lot of moisture and enjoy richer soil than the hardpan clay that is naturally present. I water enough to try to keep them from wilting, but I also do not fertilize with Miracle Gro or similar products. I DO use compost mixed with the soil and as a top dressing to hold in moisture and this seems to have made the difference for me. The plants that do the best for me are the ones that are planted in raised beds along with vegetables, etc... I'm not sure what your soil is like, but if you have either clay or sand you may try adding some type of moisture retaining amendment.
