I keep my finished compost in a large plastic tote bin with a lid. Keep it moist but not to wet. As I open the bin to take out compost, I search through it and remove any worms I find. The babys that have hatched will survive just fine. There are always several. Seems you can never get them all (or all the eggs) the first sifting!
As I have more compost finished, I add it to the tote.

First I'd wait about 6 weeks. That gives everyone time to hatch and grow to an easily visible size, but should get them before they're sexually mature, so they won't be laying even more cocoons.

I've found that when I put a tight lid on for a few hours, they try to escape the low oxygen conditions by crawling up the sides. Do that a couple of times (with a break in between to make sure the bacteria have enough oxygen) and you should get most of the worms out. Either that or try the mesh bag with well rotten food or food/bedding combo. I think the trick is to wait long enough so they're big enough to pick out, but not so long you get more cocoons.

I'm no expert, but with moist conditions and (usually) enough oxygen, the microbes should be fine for that long. (9 months).

I see saving the compost over a long period of time gets a little more complicated than i had thought. I was thinking along the lines of saving the worms before they expire not that they would keep going and growing.

I sure didn't think of the worms getting so big that they lay more eggs let alone waiting for the baby's to get big enough to see.

I think i will try a combo of the bag method then the lid. Then give it a poke through just before i use it. Just to be extra careful.

What is the benefit of keeping the compost moist until you use it? When it's done I just put it in a bin with a lid and let it dry out. I use it as needed. Aren't these microbes that you speak of in the soil already? Do I really want these microbes in my houseplants for instance?

The microbes are there in limited numbers.

These microbes are a good thing and more is better. They boost the growth rate, healthier plants and better tasting veggies. If the compost drys out the microbes die out.

And its all natural.
