Pruning Grape Vines

I have several grape vines that I planted to cover a pergola. They did a great job about the second year. We got grapes about the third year. Well actually the Bluejays got the grapes. I really did not care about the grapes. My goal was reached, covering the pergola.

The 4th year the vines went up into the trees. When do I prune them and how?

You want to prune in midwinter to minimize sap bleeding. And they can be pruned hard - down to 2-3 buds per each lateral cane from main stem/trunk. And you can thin out/remove any laterals if growth is too dense.
