question about training Akebia vine

I have an Akebia growing for a few years, up an pergola. It has numerous stems growing up from the soil and they have gotten very intertwined. I also get a lot of new growth starting at the base which usually grows along he ground.

How are you pruning this vine?

Would it be better to have a single main stem up to the top of the pergola and then let it branch over the top? It might be easier to control the extra growth from the root zone?

Mine grows like that as well but there is a main stem that is much thicker then the others. I haven't bothered pruning mine but do lift the vines an attach them to a trellis. Mine is only about 4 or 5 years old. The local nature center has several growing over a large pergola and they are pruned to a single lower main stem, actually a trunk, because it's several inches in diameter. They allow them to branch when they reach near the top of the pergola. I have no idea how old their vines are but it looks beautiful.
