Is this Vigna Vine?

I bought seeds on ebay that were sold as vigna caracalla. I've read the descriptions of corkscrew and snail vine and I still don't know which one I have or if this is even either one of them.

The small (1/2") light purple flower does turn a yellow color, but the shape doesn't really look like a corkscrew OR a snail to me. There is absolutely no scent. It certainly is not showy; and from a little distance, you don't know if that's a flower or bird doo!

Can anyone relate to this? I am disappointed.

You would need to post a picture of the plant.
Have you looked on Google images to compare? Not all plants have the same fragrance. Is the plant robust and growing well and is it in sun?
Some plants are slow to perform the first growing season from seed.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I've looked at lots of images and read lots of descriptions, and I still cannot tell. The vine is growing really well. I think I've figured out how to post a picture. But my camera still can't get close enough to really see without having a glare, so don't know if this will help. I have catalogs at home with pictures showing a definite spiral which mine do not have.

If this is all it does, it would just have to be grown for the coverage the vine gives. It certainly couldn't begin to compare with something like hyacinth bean. But really wish I knew for sure because I would like to pass on some seeds but don't want to call it by the wrong name.

I see what you mean, morningstroll! It is a robust vine and to my eyes, is not the snail vine. I'm not sure what it is though.

If you post it on the Name that Plant! Forum, you should receive a proper identification.

I agree, the flowers are small and not showy.

    carol23,

I think I figured this out - the flower looks just like one of the strophostyles, with the twisted keel. The leaves don't look just like the pictures I've seen of them, but they are supposed to be variable. Now I've just got to find that corkscrew vine for next year!

That makes sense. I guess it's this one, Strophostyles helvola.

Sometimes items sold on eBay are not what they seem or even what is in the photo representing that offering!
Two years ago I ordered what looked like arilbred Iris in the picture. When the fans flowered this year, it was nothing more than Iris pallida, something I already grow. It makes me angry to purchase something mislabeled. Likely in your case as well as mine, the seller knew it wasn't what they advertised.

Yes, I think you're right. Don't know what all those words mean but I think it is definitely my bloom; and the leaves are really very similar. I had never even heard of this plant before. I just found it by accident when I went on a company's site who sold vigna caracalla. Then I looked at what other vines they had and there was a picture.

So I can see if a person has and sells both kinds, there could be a mixup; but don't know if that's what happened on ebay. This person has sold a lot of things and has 100% positive rating so you don't like to think they knew better. Of course when we're leaving our feedback the seeds have not sprouted and grown and flowered yet.

I'll probably get rid of the vine, which I'm sure is very hardy and will take over if I let it, and replace it next year. Thanks. It's been a learning experience.
