Ivy removal...do chemicals work?

I have a woodland area behind my fence that I own. It is COVERED in ivy. The trees are also covered in ivy. We are trying to figure out the best way to remove it and heavy machinary would be our best answer, however it is not an area that is easy to acces. Manpower would work, but we are talking about a full-time job for someone for over a week and I don't have that kind of money to spend. Would chemicals? I know it won't kill the ivy completely, but we need to kill what is covering the ground now so we can get the area under control (years of neglect and yard debris/wood just dumped...ivy covering it now so we can't clean it until the ivy is gone). What chemical would I use? Other suggestions?

Oh my, I see you're in Oregon. English ivy is a major headache there. So much so in fact that a group called "NO Ivy League" was formed in Portland, I believe, to help in the eradication of this vile plant. I tried to provide a link but their site seems to be down at the moment. You might try later. It's www.noivyleague.com. They can give you the best advice you'll get anywhere.

BTW, I live on the east coast and it's a problem here as well but not as much so as in the northeast. YET!

Some herbicides work well on English ivy and complete eradication is possible. The link to the Nature Conservancy invasive weed site will explain their proper use.

I have a whole bunch of vines in my yard that I want to kill with chemicals. Are there any chemicals which will only kill the vines and leave all of the other plants alone?
