Ahhh... Freecycle.org Sort of like Craig's list, only you can only give things away, not sell them. The whole idea was to keep stuff out of the landfills. I got both of my worm bins from Freecycle. :-) Great place to get rid of stuff that you no longer need but is too good to just toss in the trash. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

and I just 'Cycled 4 bags of mainly oak leaves, and theyre mostly chopped up! My car smells good now, like fall!

I just sent an ask to someone offering 3 garbage cans- if theyre not leaky, theyre my new rain barrels!!!

so yeah. I wouldnt split a small worm population if youre going to have freezing temps and have no way to insulate them, but non-freezing should be fine.

Actually, I just posted on Freecycle for anyone to save their straw bales from Halloween decorations. I will pick them up and use them to insulate my worm bins. :-)

The original bin is going so well, I really don't want to disturb that one. I was planning on starting the new bin from scratch and just go ahead and buy another pound of starter worms for the new bin. Does that sound like the right thing to do?

if you need the bin to process more NOW, and you have money to spend, its not a bad option.

Having had a fairly great worm season (gave away a coffee can to a friend, hers are multiplying fine), and started another small bin, I wouldnt spend money on more worms.

But, im on a tight budget now. good luck!

I would play with the population you have in the old bin and also use, not only some of the worms, but put a good inch or so of the vermicompost from the old bin into the new one. That way your population will grow again in the old bin and you will not have to start from scratch in the new one. That active compost will jump start your new one.
