BSFL do a better job at processing waste, but their poop isn't entirely stable. I'm guessing the redworms allow for the final step of turning the food into nutrient available fertilizer

Redworms produce vermicompost, and can be container-raised for generations. Maggots (housefly _et al_) produce sludge--and grow up to be disease vectors that will escape or die trying. Black soldier fly larvae don't produce a stable compost, though the high-protein friable matter they do leave behind is a favorite food for redworms; their adult form is not dangerous, but cannot reproduce in a container.

What's your goal? If you just want to get rid of food scraps, any of those will work. Maggots, I think, the fastest, with BSFL a close second; redworms with the most valuable "end product." Some people use BSFL and redworms together.

Worms are cute......maggots, BSFL are creepy

I freaked out when I found my bin full of maggots in August, with the worms squeezed over to one side - I'd been away for 3 weeks. I read a great post on this site, realised they were Black Soldier Fly and came to appreciate them. Since then I've only found 3 mature BSF flies in the garden, the maggots are nowhere to be seen, the worms are flourishing & I've removed some fantastic compost from the bottom of my 1 year old bin. BSF keep house flies away & are definitely to be welcomed - I'm hoping for a return visit next summer.
