This is the only place I come to. When I first started, I scoured the web for info. A lot was redundant. Much turned out to be just plain wrong.

Very informative discussions here, absolutely no flaming, plus we've got Kelly for the final word. What more could a worm herder want?

I agree with Joe; the extraordinarily good info and wonderful people here make every other website I've looked at seem boring; besides, the info in other places often tends to be redundant or (more troubling) wrong! (Even the much-loved Worms Eat My Garbage book has a fair amount of somewhat misleading info in it.) Reading this website regularly not only answers all your questions, but demonstrates quite decisively that there are lots and lots of perfectly successful ways to pursue this fun hobby; that so long as the basics are met, the details are quite flexible; and that you can tweak your set up to enhance your own personal goals from the system (whether it's worm breeding, compost-producing, waste recycling, or a combination of all three).

And the absolute absence of flamers is so refreshing! We couldn't even get a good fight going over the dog poop issue!

That said, I have found the photographs in other websites useful; especially since Cass stopped posting her pictures (where did you go, Cass?) we've had kind of a dearth of good close-ups, and they can be very helpful. Maybe we should try to start a Photo Gallery?

To those who only visit this forum for all of their vermicomposting information: With all due respect, please just ignore this thread and please don't post in it. Thanks!

This thread is intended for those who get their information here AND don't mind venturing out to other sites. If something seems contradictory at another site, they can always come back to this forum and post a new thread questioning it.

Oh I can see now I'm in with a bunch of great people.

But before I start clicking on all those links, to learm more about worm composting, maybe someone can answer these two questions.

Why do people "temp" their worm bins -- do they really get too hot?

And does one need to use a magnifying glass to see worm eggs? Cause I know I have baby worms but even after searching each and every day I can't seem to find a worm egg.

Sorry, I'm adding a third question. Those little white worms are not red wigglers are they? and they won't hurt my bin will they?

Mickey2..In a plastic bin, temperatures can spike and do great harm to your worm population. In-ground bins do not have that problem, as the worms can get away from conditions that are not to their liking. Viewing cocoons does not require a magnifying lens. Check out the link below. They are the size of a BB and change in color, from a lemon color to almost burgandy, just before hatching. Just a guess, but those little white worms could be "pot worms". They are good guys and will not harm your worms. Check out: happydranch.com and look at their "invertebrate" page. If you have more questions, I think you should start a new thread..:)

Steve, most of the people here...all, I believe, who've been around awhile, have been to most all the other sites and wound up coming back.

Like someone said earlier, there's not all that much to it, and many of the sites are trying to sell their separating gizmos, or worms-by-consignment, or spigot bins for "leachette collection/extraction", (IMHO, leachette verifies excess moisture and isn't a desirable bin management product), or any other possibly associated item remotely connectable to worming. We're just talking about our experiences here.

Some of the commercially-driven sites seem as silly, to me, as the "This is Bob!" commercials pushing those placebo pills offering a "little respect in the neighborhood".
