I think what you are describing is the worm's aversion to light. Phototoxicity I think it is called. They will burrow to a safer place. No need to worry.

Sorry- I think I was unclear. I know about avoiding light being a way to harvest worms. But when I'm digging to plant something, I don't have time to gently scrape the earth away an inch at a time like in my worm bin. I was thinking perhaps there is a weak electric current generator or sound wave manufacturer that I could use to temporarily repel the worms from my dig site.

Maggie, I understand your concern about your worms, but although you may positively ruin the day for a couple of worms, you won't affect the worm population by digging around. They'll get over it.
