My guess is 'Moses in the cradle' or Tradescantia spathacea.
Considered rather indestructible. While it may tolerate dryness, it would probably do best with loose soil that never is soaking wet or bone dry.

They sure look like they are related but I think on the name that plant forum they found a closer match Calesia fragrans. It is more succulent and does not have purple undersides. I am hoping this years new stalks will make some flowers . that should give me a definite I.D. Thanks Ric
