Yesi was reading on a site yesterday that said red wigglers only willhave the cocoons they make hatch at 70 degrees or better i only have mine at 65 does this mean the cocoons will sit till its 70 or they will all die im sort of worried about this.And the totes are in the basement and it would cost alot to bring the temp up to 70 I just bought one of those aqurarium heaters to put in a mason jar to try to bring the temp up but i want to try to get it set first in a emty bed it can be ajusted .
If anybody has some advice i sure would like some thank you.

Nice innovative idea on keeping them warm, I had not seen that temperture information on any of the research I have done. You may want to experiment, I think you said you had a couple bins? If so just heat one and compare the number of babies later in the season. Maybe next year you could save a little electricity. Also remember that as you add bedding it will become an insulation layer and your heater may need to be adjusted down to compensate. I've only been vermicomposting for a few months so hopefully a n experienced member can comment on the 70 degree temp.

Hi All; The cocoons will hatch at temps between 50-80 deg F. The speed at which they hatch will be slower(45 days or more) at the lower temps and will increase to app 21 days at the higher temps.

Not true, it would cost next to nothing. Just add more high nitrogen food.

THE important temp is the temp in the bin(use a compost or cooking thermometer), NOT the temp of the room the bin is in.
