50% off Iris

I ordered 12 iris yesterday and paid $19.00!

http://www.landfairgardens.com/index.html

She is local (as in Texas) she is up in Lamar county - I know the area because that is where my dad is from (Paris)

ANYWAY - the sale is GREAT she has new introductions and regular stuff ALL 50% at checkout when you enter 2007!

Many of her iris are only $3-$5 making them a steal at half price!

ANGIE! Shame on you. You are rivaling me for enabler of the month. I just placed a telephone order with Dean and she was a lovely lady and her husband (spoke to him first) seems adorable as well.

I bought 17 irises!!! LOL, I *needed* them (oh sure!). The cost for the 17 was 38 dollars. With tax and shipping, 48 dollars. Including shipping and tax, it averages $2.83 EACH PLANT, LOL I love it! And I didn't even need to pay for fuel into the DFW area to purchase them. Thanks for the heads up, but I may be cussing you when they get here and I am trying to find somewhere to plunk them all!

I gave in too. I remember them growing in my yard when I was little and felt sentimentally attached when I saw them. Now I just need to figure out if I have a place for them.

I succumbed to temptation too. Love all the colors and the prices are impossible to resist. When do we need to plant these?

Now that I bought them, where should I plant them? I know absolutely nothing about growing them. Would someone be willing to teach me the ABCs of these things? Alright, professional iris growers, I know you are out there!

I just planted a whole bunch of them last week.
Just make sure about half of the rhizome is exposed but all of the roots.
    What kind did you get?

Okay, I guess the better question would've been how many didn't you get? LOL

Jolana means be sure all the roots are in the ground.
    (need new bulbs, girlie???)

gardenweb has a wonderful Iris Forum where we can get all kinds of info/expertise.

There's at least one famous hybridizer, Walter Moores, who posts there.

You can plant irises any time, but the best time is in September (the most wonderful time of year to get out & grub around in the dirt in Texas.)

Hahahaha, yeah, seen any lately, lol
Do they sell new brain bulbs, LOL
    Just askin
    Hehehehe

Runbells - what area are you in? We could have a planting party -lol
They are easy to grow - they don't like areas that stand in water - but take the drought well. I start watering mine in late feb or so - if there is no rain - this year I haven't watered them at all!
    Cinnamon Girl
    Lemon Pop
    Queen in Calico
    Skating Party
    Sterling Stitch
    Spreckles
    Silence
    Shoot the moon
    Ruffled ballet
    Joyce Terry
    Hindenburg
    Elisa Renee

I'm so excited - I now too have to decide where I can put them - lol!?!

I'm in Austin and I bought several each of 2 different varieties (I can't even remember which . . . can I have a brain bulb too?) One variety is orangish and one is purple. I like that color combination. Do ya'll have yours in full sun or part sun?

Most of mine are in full sun, some in morning sun.

    Kristi

Mine have full sun - but - have a friend who only get part sun and do fine. They are the one plant you see at old crumbling houses that are still alive and blooming after years of neglect~
I love iris...my mom always grew them when I was a child and my brothers in-laws are members of the iris society and go to shows, etc...and have taught me all kinds of things. They have acers and acers of iris!

*sigh* you people are the worst kind of enablers. 16, I ordered 16. But with tax and shipping it came out to like $2.38 each, even if I kill them all it's way more economical than 16 roses or orchids! I figure us newbies to gardening need to start with the cheap stuff. Justification, it's all about the justification.

Michellesg you will love them...they are definatly a very little effort plant!

Haha! Yes but only after I rip out the bermuda grass to plant all 16. I got all ready today to go out there and do it but didn't make it past the shade of the patio. Too hot!!!

yes - pretty humid here today too.
You can put them in pots until the fall if that is easier- while you get your beds ready.

Wow! What a selection! I haven't ordered yet, but did print the ones I really liked. I don't do pay pal, so would need to call this one in. The ones I really liked are Chief Waukesha, Almaden, Enchanting, Power Surge and Rock Star. When you call the order in . . . do they take credit cards? Maybe it would be easier to mail this order in with a check.

I did mine via paypal - I would just give them a call and ask, they are VERY nice people.

I am SO glad i saw this post!!! I am local - less than 30 miles from Landfare gardens!! I went there to there open house several years ago and have been trying to locate them every since. They are listed on another site somewhere- and the phone number is incorrect. I just called them and told them that - and that i had been looking for them for a few years!

Thanks for the info and link!

If anyone needs infor or questions I have been there and seen there yard!
    Jennifer

Yes, if you call they will take your credit card. That's what I did and then they e-mailed me a great itemized receipt.

    Kristi

YEAH - my order showed up today - they are wonderful nice rhizomes!

    ~Angie~

Lucky you! Apparently there have been at least 2 people who Landfair has cancelled orders for and refunded their money because of the rains. They posted over on the iris forums. I was told mine were going to be mailed either the 25th or 26th but haven't heard from them since. When did they mail yours?

They arrived today, were shipped USPS priority mail postmarked June 27th.

I emailed them a few weeks ago and they had told me they would be shipping my order towards the end of the month.
I sure am sorry some people haven't gotten theirs - I didn't know. I'll have to go read the iris forum.

    ~Angie~

I am glad to hear others are just now getting their orders. I was getting worried as I have not received anything yet and not heard from the company to say there would be any delay. Hopefully, my order will come soon.

I got mine on the 27th. They really DO look very good and healthy! And I got a small refund on postage. All in all, a really nice shopping experience and I will use them again.

    Kristi

Their website is closed and I just called, they don't accept orders anymore. Too much damage from the flood.

My order arrived today and they look great. I planted them all in an opened bag of potting soil with holes in the bottom until fall. I don't think they'd survive this weather right now even with all the rain.

I received my order today! They look great. Hopefully, they will get rooted in before the heat hits again. We have not had as much rain as some areas, even tho it is an unusual year. So nice to not have to run the sprinklers!

Yeah, especially when you've had to turn the main valve off since the dh hit the line while trying to dig a hole for all the dang bare root roses purchased this month....
