There is also the native one, Mahonia aquifolium (native to the west coast). I imagine they have similar wildlife benefits, but Mahonia aquifolium might actually benefit things beside birds (like tiny insects that the birds like to eat). Mahonia bealei is actually invasive in some areas of the southeast.

Lots of different leatherleaf Mahonias. Some big, some small. Some have longer leaf fronds than others, but most are fairly similar in appearance.

This may not apply to east texas, but here in the Pacific Northwest, in addition to Mahonia aquifolium, two other types of Mahonias are very common (and inexpensive, especially if bought as a small plant).

1. Mahonia media 'Charity'. I believe it is a cross between M. japonica and M. something. It can get very large (10 ft or more). The main thing is it has very striking blooms, larger sprays of flowers than most Mahonias, and so also larger clusters of blue fruit. Fragrant, blooms in Feb.

2. Mahonia nervosa. Small, maybe 2 feet tall over very long time if ideally suited. Usually under 1 foot. Nice flowers, nice berries, good leaf color in winter (nice bronze tones). Blooms in March-April. Prefers shade here, so likely would require shade where you are.

Both of these attract bumble bees, mason bees, hummingbirds and berry-eating birds in my yard. The M. Nervosa not quite as much, perhaps because it is so low to the ground that it is not as safe as a larger shrub for flying wildlife.

Check local nurseries to see which Mahonias do well in your area and why. Should be able to pick up some that are reasonably priced and suited for your area.
