Despite living on the prairie, most of the nurseries around my neck of the woods are stuck in the " boring foundation planting/petunias" mode. However, I've been really excited to discover that you can buy plants on EBAY!

Yep, in the past couple of months I'm embarrassed to report that I've spent several HUNDREDS of dollars on plants (and garden accessories ) and have had only one disappointment (and that was the fault of my local P.O.). I've found spicebushes, native elderberries, several varieties of serviceberries, chokecherry, witch hazel, many different viburnums, american hazelnut, wonderful native ferns and wildflowers, clove currant, bird-friendly dogwoods, and other, more "ornamental" plants. Oh, and grasses and seeds of wildflowers, too.

They're usually shipped bare-root to save on postage, and often they're the gleanings and sharings of other amateur gardeners. However, I've found the professional nurseries I've dealt with (especially Moonshine Designs) to be great, too.

The plants aren't huge but they're usually great bargins; I may just grow them in a nursery bed for the summer and plant them out in the fall.

It's a good alternative to searching through forty-dozen catalogs and I've "met" a bunch of friendly gardeners, too.

Don't know how close you are to Massachusetts, but the New England Wildflower Society has beautiful stuff. It is a bit pricey though. I have to warn you, but it is well established (probably a couple years old easily). You can also walk through the gardens. The garden is called Garden in the Woods in Sudbury, Massachusetts.

If you haven't already, see if using the link below helps. I only found 1 native nursery in Connecticut from this and from a quick look, it seems to be mailorder only. The were a fair # of Connecticut nurseries so you maybe be able to check their websites to see what they carry. In cases I haven't found the plants I'm looking for, I sometimes just call the local nurseries to ask if they have a particular plant which is much quicker than driving out to them to see.
