Often in wildlife gardening books there are instructions for creating toad hideouts. I often find them under logs in a small depression in the soil, maybe an 1" or so deep. They also seem to like to borrow in bark mulch that has not been treated with insecticide to kill termites. I've linked a photo of a natural toad hide in a glade.
