Not sure what birds you are trying to attract. In our neighborhood, we have cedar waxwings that love to perch in hackberry trees and eat the fruit. The local cardinals appreciate my blueberry shrubs, and have the sense to wait until the fruit is ripe. None of our local birds seem interested in the red currant shrub we have out front. We don't use any toxic herbicide or pesticide on our lawn, and we often see various birds out on the grass, poking around for the insects and worms that live there. I used to keep a birdfeeder stocked with sunflower seeds, but the squirrels were too much of a nuisance, so I stopped. However, we get volunteer sunflower plants every spring, and I let some of these grow to maturity. The goldfinches like to perch on the seed heads and feed, and of course the squirrels also climb up and have a feast.
Viburnum x rhytidophylloides 'Alleghany' is a hybrid of Wayfaringtree Viburnum and Leatherleaf Viburnum. The leaves are like that of Leatherleaf viburnum (Viburnum rhytidophyllum). It has yellow-white flowers and bright red fall fruit, grows up to 10 ft tall and wide, and does well in either full sun or partial shade. Just be sure to get another x rytidophyllum or another viburnum that can cross pollinate it, such as 'Mohican' Viburnum lantana. Without a cross pollinator, you won't get very many berries, if any.
