The Winter Garden

Broccoli through winter

I planted broccoli and cauliflower in my vegetable garden in late October. I only got to harvest one small head of broccoli before the cold really set in. Now the plants are just standing there, not growing, not dying. They are large plants with only very small or no flower heads. Will they form usable heads when Spring comes along or should I just compost them?

IN THE PACIFIC NW, BROCCOLI OVERWINTERED W/OUT COVERINGS FINE, EVEN THRU A COUPLE OF SNOW DAYS (GONE IN 48 HRS). SPRING BROUGHT LOTS OF SIDE SPROUTS & THEN FLOWERING SHOOTS, (EDIBLE JUST WHEN BUDS ARE BREAKING OPEN-- SEE ASIAN VEGGIE RECIPES FOR IDEAS).
TRICK IS TO CHOOSE " HIGH SIDE SHOOTS PRODUCTION", ALSO COLORED VARIETIES, (RED, PURPLE, BLUE GREEN) ARE MORE WINTER HARDY, IT SEEMS... K.

I have had regular success with over-wintering broccoli in my zone (with an average winter, not below normal). It gets an early start and I can get production before the early March planted sets.
