Thanks for posting the link. I haven't noticed whether or not there are acorns here, but the squirrels around here (at least the few I've seen in the yard and while driving through the neighborhood) seem to have enough to eat.

I hope it works out better for the others soon.

I have a lot of oak on my property and have been marveling at the lack of acorns. I have none, not a one. This time of year I should be cursing them due to the insane volume but I haven't had to shovel them out of anywhere. We've had drought and have lost a couple of oaks to it but this is ridiculous.

We did have a wet spring and low pollen.

I lack a few normal critter species that depend on them, and am concerned about those that do need them that don't eat from feeders, let alone don't live in a yard which supplies a bird buffet. The chipmunks loaded their homes with millet and milo from my feeders which isn't good storage food. All in all it's a bummer.

If anyone has an acorn shortage in their area and starts to see starving squirrels, may I suggest they temporarily put out Kaytee Forti-Diet for Mouse, Rat and Hamster to take the edge off their hunger? That's one brand of solid food that wildlife rehabbers provide to orphaned or injured squirrels, because it provides more complete nutrition than corn, peanuts, or birdseed mix. You can find it in pet stores.

You can say that an acorn shortage is one of Mother Nature's ways of controlling overpopulation, but a little thoughtful intervention to ease suffering can't be wrong, can it???

thank you taragirl, I did not know that and will look for it. I know the little guys need the taurine in acorns and hate to see them eat all the crud bird seed. I consider my ground feeders diversion feeders, not a dietary staple. I really hated seeing them try and store the stuff! I've been giving them vegetables and fruit but it's not the same.
