Winter garden lighting

I'm running very late, but I want to experiment with growing some winter veggies this year. I'm thinking carrots, spinach, lettuce, beets, and mustard greens.

I have two 24' by 3' raised beds I'll cover with garden quilts. I'm considering hanging Christmas lights just under the cover for light. I've read wildly differing reports of how effective these may be. Any ideas? Any heat the produce would be a plus, but I'm really hoping to provide at least some more light after dark, so the plants can get at least 10 hours of light a day.
