Isn't that a beautiful blue? You see the seeds offered all over. The only thing that I've heard is that it is hard to grow and seems to prefer the temperate humidity of Northwest US. If anyone knows differently I would love to hear it.

Karla, I got germination with WS last spring, but they died off while quite small. From what I've gathered by observation on GW threads and elsewhere, I would say Z5 could be perfect. What a heavenly color--go for it, and keep us posted!

Hello:Constance I will keep you posted on the germination of the seeds this spring.If they make it ,I probably wont see a bloom until the following year.What a Gorgeous!color.I saw in seymour seeds catalog the Grandis is similar to the Himalayan poppy,hardy in zone#5.

Being a Himalayan mountain plant, it hates heat. Not sure about humidity. My guess is that it would prefer low humidity. Make sure it grows in soil that is gritty and excellently drained. But that doesn't mean it likes dry soil - uh uh. Use a rock mulch that won't hold the moisture at the surface and keeps everything that is not a root dry. Also, lean soil (not rich) will encourage flowering. Fertilizing mildly when small is fine to increase size, but fertilizing when large enough to bloom may prevent bloom.

Even well seasoned alpine gardeners have dificulty growing meconopsis to bloom in North America, unless they live in the mountains.

I hAve successfully grown Meconopsis Betonicifolia in California. This year I am also trying M. Lingholm which is a fertile hybrid that is supposed to be easier to grow. I grow these in a narrow canyon in a redwood area that gets very limited sun. I think the seed is more viable than the books say since I hAve successfully sprouted seeds that were more than a 18 months old.
