We live in a townhouse-style apartment. The neighbors windows are only a couple feet away from ours, which sucks for privacy. I have a long planter box perpendicular to the building between the living room windows with a 3'X 8' wooden lattice attached to the box. DH added a thin strip of wood on top at an angle to the building to keep it stable in the wind. I have another(just a 2'X8')on the other side of the building to separate the kitchen windows. These really help define "our space", otherwise, the neighbors would be staring into our window from their outdoor furniture in the summer. I grow Black-eyed Susan Vines and Scarlet Runner Beans on them. The wooden lattice is very inexpensive(a few dollars for a 2'X8" strip) compared to the vinyl lattice, but doesn't last as long and needs to be reinforced with a little trim or scrap wood along the edges. It looks quite nice painted.
Also, years ago I used 2"X4" welded-wire fencing for an arch over a gate to a small fenced in garden. This was out in the boonies, so it didn't have to look great, but it didn't look bad. I grew Morning Glories on it. HTH

I've seen lots of different discussions about building trellises and poles for vines... some are very simple, like painting an old ladder and training the vine through it, and others are very complicated.
