Anyone started pruning their roses in Waukesha?

Hi all gardenbuddies,

My roses are coming up and showing good pink growth. I am so eager to prune them, but I am not sure about the timing. Has anyone started pruning their roses?

A quick update about my garden "Amoeba" - Well, it is going to really expand and split this time unlike the previous single-cell model :)

1. Tulips are up and really looking forward to bloom

2. Daffodils have also come en masse

3. Have rose seedlings doing well in the basement - I have not allowed them to put buds as I want them to have strong roots first. (I collected some hips from Frame Park on one our strolls, and they are the most abundant now)

4. Vegetable Patch - Yes, finally, after months and months of planning

5. Blackberry lillies have also sprouted

6. Have sown clematis seeds - None of them have sprouted till now :( Waiting for them, especiialy I am so fond of Clematis Paniculata ( Sweet Autumn Clematis) that I am not able to wait to see its blooms

6. Have lots and lots of garden books and magazines from the library sitting on my table. And lots of xeroxed papers.... You can guess.

7. Have many seeds to plant, though I am not sure where exactly I will be planting them. Hoping to put one more flower bed.

8. And the most important thing that we did for this spring is construct a compost bin. We got some free wood and we made a 3-by-3 compost bin. I cannot wait to fill it. I read somewhere that leaves + manure + soil becomes a quick compost - 2 to 3 weeks (though I am sckeptical about it). I am saving all my kitchen scraps for it and posting in waukeshafreecycle that I want grass clippings and leaves and all that. Planning to ask golf club guys if they are going to bag it and if I can take them.

And I hope that I will get extraordinary blooms and wonderful garden this year. And I hope this for you all too. Have a wonderful gardening in spring.

I too am from Waukesha. Nice to hear from you!
Compost in 2-3 weeks? Not likely. I have a nice pile, but 6 months is more typical.
I can't overwinter a rose to save my soul. Tried 4 times, never had a rose make it. Frankly, I give up.
Crocus are up and bloomed, daffodils up but not bloomed.
Seeing signs of life from the other plants, life is good.

Yep, I pruned all ready, but I am a rebel. I guess you are supposed to wait for the forsynthia to bloom, but sometimes it blooms a little later than when my roses are ready.

HI Daddylonglegs and clairewags,

Thanks for responding. I have pruned couple of my roses last week as they are putting out vigorous new growth. Daddtlonglegs, haven't you heard of freecycle.org? (Or freecycle.com?), just check it out. It is a recycling community. I have got many flower pots like it and bags and bags of leaves that I am planning to use for compost.

Blossom, by pruning, do you mean the dead and damaged wood? I'll be doing that this weekend. I'm getting new canes coming up, but I have a lot of dead stuff I have to cut off too.
I wouldn't use any grass clippings from a golf club. They use tons of chemicals to kill the weeds, and I wouldn't want that in my gardens, especially a veggie garden. We have free compost and mulch from the city where I live, but I don't take that either. I don't need anyone elses' diseased leaves, etc. in my gardens. I'm not a totally organic gardener, I do use Roundup, but that's it. Oops, I forgot I do use a chemical fertilizer on my pots. But for my gadens I use bagged cow manure and compost. They say it's been aged and sterlized, but I have to admit, I still see some seedlings in those bags! LOL!!
My bulbs are coming up well and my corydalis should be blooming very soon. With the nice weather we've been having, I'm really getting antsy on seeing flowers. :)
