Hi, I've been gardening for over 40 years and here's some things I've learned. You can put in the onions, peas, and lettuce as soon as the ground is able to be worked. They can withstand some cold weather. The tomatoes are usually started ahead of time in the house, as are the peppers and eggplant, or buy plants from a nursery. They need to be protected from any cold weather by being covered overnight if the temperatures drop below 35 or so. The best is not to set these plants out until late May when all danger of frost is past. Seeding green beans, carrots and corn can be done in early May usually as are melons, but watch the weather closely and protect these if the temperature drops into the lower 30's. Hi, I know many people feel that the County Extension office is an unhelpful answer. But here is WI we have some really great county extenstion agents. Give yours a call. They should send you out, free of charge, a bunch of very useful information pamplets. Use your local garden centers (not big box stores). I know there are some really good ones in your area. If the first person you ask isn't sure of the answer, just ask them to get someone that is sure. Most of the people that work there have a lot of knowledge and will be happy to help you, whether you are buying that day or not.
Last I heard (last week) the soil here (Pardeeville) is only at 37, that is too cold for anything. You can plant, but you will not get anything earlier than if you wait. And you will run the risk of having to replace your seeds. We are all wishing you good luck.
