I'm so sorry to hear about Lizzie's passing. There are some native bulbs that might work well. Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)is one such bulb. Trilliums like those conditions too. Dicentra eximia (Wild Bleeding Heart) is particularly appropriate for such a spot. While the flowers don't last long, the foliage will be around for several months. Ferns would be a nice addition and would last longer - after the flowers are gone.

Where abouts are you located in zone 6?

I agree with esh ga's suggestions and I have a couple more dicentra cullcaria, and anemone canadensis makes a nice ground cover with little white flowers.

I have marked the spot of our pet, with a St. Francis Statue that holds a dish for bird seed. Its surrounded with flowers also.

I like Esh and Joe's suggestions. Dutchmen's breaches might also work. I still think about my old dog who died just about the time that the Berlin Wall was torn down and, thus, lessened some of the joy I felt about that historical occassion.
