Needs acidic soil, so if you've got that, then you should be ok.

I live near Katy and have been growing them for 15 years. They DO NOT like heavy clay, but can grow in sandy soil at least a foot high and placed on top of heavy clay. If you want to see the trees and sample the fruit, now is a great time. A few fruit are just now falling off the trees, signaling that they are ripe and ready. Have you ever eaten any paw paws?

i've never tried pawpaw. i've only recently read about them when searching for native fruit trees to grow.

i've been living in Katy for a few years now. we do have clay. our yard seems to have about 8" of topsoil on top.

do you have more than one variety of pawpaw? i read they need cross pollination.

I have 2 big, old trees and a lot of their suckers that have been grafted with different varieties. This is the first year that some of the grafted branches have set fruit. Of the different varieties here, Wabash has been the one that I prefer. I will soon be sampling some new ones to see if they compare well or not. You can send me an email to get the phone if you want to either check out the trees or fruit. Although some people LOVE pawpaw fruit, others have a problem with the smell or taste. If I were you, I would try to test drive the auto before buying it.
