I have a lot of favorites for winter interest. (depending on the depth of snow, of course) I love the look of benches, birdbaths, and other architechual stuff laden with snow and lit by a street light or home lighting.

Second favs are evergreen trees and shrubs. In my small front yard, I have large blue junipers along a lot line, and small arborvitae and blue spruce positioned among a central garden. In front of the wooded lot line, I have tall sedum and small grasses, a few tall grasses too.

Lastly, I love the dark branches of a fruit tree, and the white and peeling trunks of a River birch.

I too have a Lauders in my back yard. Quite spectacular.
I leave all the tall branches of enechania to float above the snow line, front and back. My birdies love them.

My front yard is so small, I just want to enjoy the few points of interest that I have. My back yard is so huge that all but the biggest stuff is lost.

I have a neighbor who has an astonishing bush. I assume its some kind of willow. He cuts to the ground most years, but when he doesn't, it is a brilliant orange.

Dont you love the contorted structure of some crab apples against the snow? Take a drive thur your neighborhood, and find stuff that pleases you.

I don't know about their outside gardens. They may not shovel the paths, but their inside greenhouse is open in the winter.

Howdy, the outdoor gardens are open! Great idea to go for ideas and solitude. The rose garden has all those pointy structures that would look great in this season. Don't know how well they maintain the paths though. By the way, if you haven't seen it, go see Atonement - great tragic/ romantic movie with some beautiful garden scenes and beautiful dresses.

Yes, they maintain the paths during the winter. I was just there on Thursday and the gardens are beautiful with all the snow.

Winter is the only time I have not seen Olbrich Gardens. I'm sure it would be worth the visit!

It is interesting but as of last Sunday, the paths were pretty icy. Wear spikes.
