Crepe Myrtle Pruning

We just moved into our house last month. We have two large Crepe Myrtle bushes that are making it very hard to mow the side of the yard.

I plan on pruning these into trees next year, but my question is, Is it too late this year to do some minor pruning? I'd like to remove the little suckers from the ground and at least cut back the lower branches so I can mow around them. I think most of the branches I'd want to cut back are the same ones that I'd end up removing next Spring.

It's already going over 100 degrees here each day, and I'm afraid if I prune them back they'll have a harder time with the heat. You can tell these things haven't been pruned in the last few years as they're very unruly looking... then again, so are all the other shrubs in the yard.
