You've got a great room to start with. Use the color palate from the chair to add solid drapery panels. If you keep the curtains closed I would choose the lighter taupe tones but you could be daring and go for the darker color if they are used mostly as panels on the side. I would also get a small table to place between the two chairs near the window making a small conversational grouping. You could add some color with accessories there. Would definitely add a more modern looking rug and a picture you love over the couch.

That big frame around the window suggests itself for some color. Pick out a color from a stripe on the dining chairs or a color that fits with them and paint just that part of the walls to start. Then recover or replace all your loose cushions in colors and textures you love. Add colorful cushions to the side chairs. Get your feet wet and go from there. Some decorators abhor accent walls, but learning how you like your color makes that a sensible next stage. My favorite color books are Joanna Copestick's "Color" (out of print but available 2nd hand) and Martha Stewart's "Decorating with Color." They have palettes that are tied to nature, so you can't go far wrong. Good luck!

Your house is not that boring. There is a lot there.
Try putting a bunch of flowers on the table. Choose your favourite ones in season.
If you like the way the room feels with some greenery, add a potted plant.
If you still like the way the room feels, choose a picture for the wall that complements the new way you feel.

I think you have done a really great job w/ your furnishings!! All you need to do is personalize the area. A patterned area rug, art, plants a lamp or two. I agree with Dar Eckart in that your coffee/side tables should be dark (like the strip in your dining chairs) Housewench has great suggestions for going slow and finding what YOU enjoy. Without measurements of the room and furniture, I would like to know if the sofa could be turned towards the window, area rugs to give color and define two distinct areas. I would have a board mounted valance, swag or pleated, mounted on the outside to the ceiling, with side panel draperies and keep the sheers, again in a color coordinating with the rugs and the stripes in the chairs. Art on the walls and floral arrangement add color too. Not a dull room at all.

If the sofa won't work to divide the rooms, use the two chairs with a table and lamp facing the window on the dining room end of room.

I have not done anything yet. I have been buying pillows and playing with different things but Once I'm done I will post a picture.
