mantid egg cases or something else?

I've been trying to find out what the light brown styrofoam looking egg cases are on my shrubs and they look very similar to some pics of mantid egg cases I have found, not the ones that are flattish but more round and attached around a stem. Can I tell whether they are Chinese mantids or something else undesirable by looking at the egg case? Are there other insects that have similar egg cases?

I found a praying mantis that was about five inches long a couple years ago. Very fascinating but I don't think I want them in my yard. I'm worried about my dog. lol

Tent caterpillars make egg cases that would be described just as you did. I've never seen one that wasn't built around a twig, unlike the mantids, which seem to be happy to leave their eggs any ol' place, lol!

The TC egg mass, however, is probably smaller than the PM's.

P.S. I escort praying mantids off my property; they take too many of the good guys!

The photos I've seen of tent caterpillar egg cases look pretty dark and these are light brown like your photo Day by Day. I think I will collect them and just see what hatches out. I suspect from looking at different photos that they are Chinese Mantids.

The old mantis egg cases I have found in my yard are light gray, like a paper wasp nest. Same color but different construction. I was happy to find the egg cases, but I have not seen a mantid the 2 years I have been at this house.
