The University of Arizona has some good info on rearing insects. Likely you need to separate those you have so that you can supply each their specific food and habitat.

Each bug eats a different thing. Some might attack other bugs. Find out what each bug eats and feed it that.

Same idea goes with pet fish. Some will eat flake food, some need live food.

What a great gift you are giving your niece...the idea that insects aren't just for swatting or stepping on...

My husband was deathly afraid of any bugs when we got married but now he finds them fascinating and I will see him going past me with a spider or moth trapped in a glass on its way to being released back outside. How much nicer it is when we share the Earth.

Peace,
Jane

So glad folks appreciate insects, spiders, bugs instead of spraying them with insecticides. Around the yard of my new house there are hardly any insects except ants and an ocassional mosquito or fly. The cute little green lizards have disappeared that were here back in late winter. I am afraid that neighbors may be over using insecticides. I have complained to some of the neighbors that my squash plants are not being polinated due to lack of insects. Some of these neighbors go completely berzerk at the sight of one bug. There are some annuals and perennials, roses and veggies blooming in my yard and there are other plants that will be blooming soon. Its nice not to have any insect problems in my vegetable garden but something is very wrong without having hardly any insects around.
