Spider & Crane Fly

17 years ago

I went to my "barn" this afternoon. As I approached the side entrance, I flushed a few Crane Flies from along the wall with my passage. As wasps are beginning to build now, I took note of the flying insects to make certain I was not going to be a target. What happened next was a serendipitous moment(for me, but not the Crane Fly) . One of the Crane Flies was sort of "scudding" along the wall when a Jumping Spider (metacyrba undata, I think) launched itself at the Crane Fly and captured it in mid-air. All this was happening about 18 inches away from my face. The spider and the fly fell about 5 feet to land on the stoop in front of the door, with no apparent harm to the spider (can't say the same for the fly though). The spider almost immediately began dragging the fly across the stoop. I ran back to the house and got the camera. When I got back to the "barn", I looked all around for the spider and fly on the stoop (it had taken me about 4 minutes round trip) but didn't see the pair anywhere on the steps. Then I stepped back and surveyed a wider field of view. I saw a small movement on the wall and looked closer. There was the spider, 2 feet up the wall, climbing backward up the side of the barn still grasping the Crane Fly. I moved in close with the camera set to "macro" and took the picture. 15 minutes later the spider had climbed about 6 feet up the wall with its meal. An hour later I could not find the spider at all. {{!gwi}}
