mass beetle suicide

we woke up yesterday to find about 50 dead japanese beetles on our deck. They didn't leave a note, so we have no idea what might have caused this. This morning, again, about another 50 were dead. I did spray my three apple trees last week, could that have been the cause?

thanks for any info,

jeff
