I don't know about actually catching the queen, but they are abundant here on the West Coast. If you put cocacola or beer in the traps, you'll catch more of them. You can also create your own traps with an empty 2 litre plastic pop bottle. Cut the bottle about a third of the way down from the spout, all the way around. Then just invert the top part and stick it into the bottom section. It should fit snugly, and they can't get back out through the spout.

If you live in an area where they are common during the summer, you'll want to make plenty of traps.

One other eco-friendly tip is to tie paper lunch bags under your awnings in such a way that they resemble wasp nests. Other wasps will not build a nest if they can see the bags. I thought my parents were nuts when they started doing this, but it really works. Both tips are way better than spraying the nests - the world has enough poison in it, and after all, you're on their property, not the other way around. Burning citronela torches or candles also keeps them at a distance, and it works for mosquitoes too.
