biting insect?

i was prepping a shady area to plant something this evening, and something flew at me, bit me, then flew away. i felt an instant sharp pain, and now i have a bite mark, swelling around the area of the bite, and my wrist throbs. i'm in the northeast, could this be a deer fly or horse fly?
