Here's a newly-eclosed Cicada. It's definitely summer now, folks!

What fascinates me is that this critter has lived here longer than we have-- we moved here in 1992 so she (I think it's female, not sure) has lived here about 4 years longer than we have, LOL!! Whoa... vintage 1988? As I recall, that was a heavy year for these guys, at least in Chicago where I lived at the time.

I just love the wings!

Yup-- one and the same! Thought "Al" deserved a place here, too. ;)

Great shot! I think they're so pretty-colored. And I love hearing their "songs" in the summertime.

This picture appears to be one of the so-called "annual" cicadas of the genus Tibicen, which take only 2-5 years to develop, so it may not be as old as you suggest. These cicadas emerge in July. The periodical cicadas of the genus Magicicada emerge in May-early June, on a 13 or 17 year cycle, and will not be seen again in the Chicago area for several years. Scroll down to the table of Magicicada emergence years at the link and look at Broods X and XIII for Chicago area emergences.
