Pupae such as that are either a butterfly or a moth.

Because you found it in the soil, I'd say this one will be a moth when the adult emerges.

I susggest you keep it in a covered clear container until that occurs. Then post another pciture. It's usually easier to ID the adult rather than the pupa. (But on this forum, someone is likely to prove me wrong!)

It is probabaly the pupae of a sphinx species but could be C. Regalis (saturniidae)(picture below).

It is a black soldier fly larvae. I saw it too.

HU, just so we don't spread misinformation......that's not the larvae of the BSF. First of all, the larvae is a very pale maggoty creature; it's the pupa that would be dark.

Secondly, it was reported to be about two inches in length, waaaaay too big to be the pupa of a BSF.

And thirdly, the image provided to us over ten years ago by chezalla simply doesn't resemble the pupal case of a BSF. If you look carefully at images of moth pupa, you'll see.

Hello! Could this be a chrysalis as well? It was on the stairs to my basement and unfortunately my daughter accidentally stepped on it. I tooa a photo bc I wasnt sure if it could be some kind of animal scat or egg of something horrendous. Now that I saw the above chrysalis Im feeling terrible that it could have been from something beautiful. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! Oh... it's about 1 1/4" long and bright green gooey stuff came out :( It was very smooth, thick, and rubbery, almost like something plastic. I didnt notice any adornment at all, however.

I think it is a june bug pupa or one a similar beetle. Not sure its Paul or Ringo though.
