Looks like an immature katydid (family Tettigoniidae). These are in the same order as crickets and grasshoppers, and are harmless to people. The things on the tip of the abdomen aren't stingers, they're called "cerci".

Nope to katydid....it's a camel cricket. Often found inside the home, they are annoying but not dangerous.

I always called them Camel Spiders. I had read they are virtually blind (hence why they don't move when you're hovering above them) since they are native to very dark, damp places (under porches, sub-basement areas). Despite being horrific in their appearance (and often quite sizable) and jumping when thought to be endangered; they are not harmful at all. My guess they eat smaller pests but I'm just speculating. Every year I see one or two in my home and assume they are "lost" from whatever dark place they typically reside. It's pretty easy to "catch them" in a jar since they cannot see you (requires slow movements) and relocate them outside for a better life.

You guys are correct, I was off on that one.

Awwww, holu....they aren't 'horrific ' looking! The one thing that I don't like about them is their creepy habit of jumping TOWARDS you when cornered. Eeek!

Camel crickets eat all kinds of things but not other insects....unless they stumble on a dead one. With their poor vision, they make rotten hunters. I guess they could be called omnivores. Inside, they can damage clothes, paper products, plants, card board, even wall board.

They are not considered a pest inside unless they start to appear in large numbers.
