Looks like a scarab beetle, but I don't know the species offhand - maybe someone else here will.

Cicadas are not beetles, BTW - they are in a different order (Hemiptera), more closely related to aphids and leafhoppers.

The picture isn't clear enough for me to tell which of the scarabs it is, either. Is it reddish in color?

Saccharum - I didn't say Cicadas are beetles, I said they are beetle-like. They have a hard exterior, similar to a beetle. But thanks for sharing your knowledge.

rhizo - the original pic was clearer but small. When I loaded it to GW it got fuzzy. :/ It is orange-ish in color and appears to have spots, like a big lady bug. Maybe I can post a link to the pic on my facebook page. I'll give it a try...

Here is a link that might be useful: bug

Pelidnota punctata, Grapevine Beetle.

Could be a Japanese Beetle. They are popular this time of year.

Looks nothing like a JB.

That's the one! Thanks rhizo. :)
I thought maybe it was a stowaway in a plant shipment, because I've never seen anything like it.
bugman - I've never seen a Japanese beetle that big, and I've seen a lot of them. ;)

I meant no offense - you said "beetle-type", that's why I interpreted it the way I did. :)

Saccharum, I'm sure that our original poster found your comments very helpful. It's not uncommon for people to call all kinds of insects beetles and a little education is great.
