I think that's a yellowjacket.

It's not like the other yellow-jackets around here. YJs have a thin waist, and the abdomen is thinner, longer, and pointed.

Check out this site to see if it helps....there are 8 or more species of yellowjacket (subfamily Vespinae) in Michigan.

Thanks for the link Amy, but they have only 2 pictures and about 10 species of social wasps listed. So I'm browsing www.bugguide.net to find out more.

I'm just used to seeing lots and lots of the Eastern Yellow Jackets all over the place and I've never seen these stubby ones before.

I think it might be a leaf cutter bee. See link below.
