We thought we caught a caterpillar and brought it inside to observe. Within a few hours it had attached itself to a stick, molted (or something) a white cottony-mesh to the sides with a writhing mass of what looked like smaller caterpillars. The "caterpillar" we brought in from outside now had small dark marks on it's sides (where it looked like the smaller ones "ejected" from), slowly crawled out of the writhing mass and was much smaller than before. It was originally all green, had no markings, and moved similar to an inchworm. When the large caterpillar crawled out, the cottony mass sides joined and continues to writhe.
My daughter wants to keep it, and it's babies, but I just want to dryheave looking at the writhing mass. I love insects, but have no idea what this is, and have a mild aversion to it/them. Anyone have a clue?
You can see the "caterpillar" crawling away from the mass of smaller writhers in the attached photo.
Thanks!
