Tiny Hummingbird Moth ID

PKponder TX Z7B

This morning I was out in my backyard taking photos of flowers and I noticed this tiny hummingbird moth (1 inch long). It actually looked almost like a bumblebee with white instead of yellow. I live in north central Texas (it's a cool, cloudy morning) and the plant it was most interested in was an Indigo Spires salvia. The pictures were not great, this little guy was fast!!!

TIA,

Pam

It was suggested on the Texas Gardening forum that this was a Nessus Sphinx. I emailed Bill Oehlke and got an ID of Aellopos species of Sphingidae, he could not tell for sure which specimen without a better picture, but thought maybe Titan. He said that the Nessus Sphinx has a more reddish brown forewings and the bands on the abdomen are yellow instead of white. I googled and came up with an Aellopos Titan found in Collin County, Texas and another in Calhoun County.

Here is a link that might be useful: AelloposTitan Moth

NEAT.... I had something like that or the other that pkponder mentioned and wondered what it was.

It was so small and looked so much like a bee of some kind that I almost missed it! Haven't seen another either. What part of the country are you in?
