Yellow Jacket Invasion

Hi everyone,

I've got a problem and I need some help!

Recently I've been noticing my yard has been overrun by what appear to be small (young?) yellow jackets. I have an acre of land that I acquired 2 years ago. Last year I killed several nests without much trouble. A few stings... but I could find the nests.

The odd thing is now I can't find the nests. In the back yard I can see about 5-10 yellow jackets at a time from any given spot in the yard. They don't seem to center around any specific place, they're just everywhere. Fortunately they're not aggressive. But it is unnerving that there are so many of them spread over such a large area.

They seem to just buzz around close to the ground as if they're foraging for food... or looking for a place to nest?

If any insect experts out there have any tips for getting rid of them I'd appreciate it! Or if anyone just knows why there are so many of them buzzing around that might make me feel a little more at ease.

Thanks!

Mike
