Fly ?

Hello everybody !

I'm Lee and usually hang out in the Hummingbird and Butterfly garden forums but have always enjoyed looking at the insects people find for ya'll to ID for them.

While taking some pictures today of a Tersa Sphinx to post on the Butterfly garden site, I noticed a small insect fly up and light on one of the stalks the moth was on. This little guy was'nt much larger than 1/4 - 3/8's of an inch

Upon closer examination, I think it's a fly of some sort.

It didn't hang around long enough for me to get the shot I wanted for you, this is what I have.

Any ideas?

Looks like one of the Plume Moths. Yep, believe it or not, it's a moth. Don't know which species, though. Neat, huh?

I've seen pictures of the plume moths and thought this "fly" looked like one, only smaller !

I thought the plume moths were alot larger than this little fellow. The stick it's sitting on is about a quarter of an inch in diameter.

Yup...a plume moth...I get lots of tiny ones, too. You might compare your details with the ones on this plume moth page....

Oooh...what a great website! I hadn't found that one yet. I forget about these little guys until I see an adult, when actually they are a common (and sometimes naughty) visitor. Many of the caterpillars bore into stems and buds.
