Wasp Nest Question

There is a big wasp (paper wasp) nest in a high corner of my front porch. As long as I left them alone, the wasps never bothered me or any of the caterpillars I raise in cages there, although sometimes it was creepy when a big group of them would fall to the floor at once, then fly back up together. I need to clean the porch before we do some work on it, and I need to move the wasp nest before I clean the porch - I've moved my remaining cats and chrysalids to my unheated/uncooled walk-in closet. Do wasps go dormant in the winter? If I wait until say, December or January, would I not be in danger of getting stung all over? Is there any safe way to move a big wasp nest?

Thanks!

Sherry
