The picture is very dark, but I would say that it is a species of rove beetle - their main characteristic is that the wing covers, which normally extend to the tip of the abdomen in most beetles, are very short, leaving the abdomen uncovered. Rove beetles are generally scavengers or predators on other insects, and are harmless to people and their property, except that some of the larger species can give a pretty painful bite if they are handled carelessly. Thanks Tucker, that's what it looked like. Glad it's not a termite infestation! Found another one today. Cheers :)
