Avoid GE Appliances!

Avoid GE appliances! We have had 4 out of 5 GE appliances die within 3.5 years in service. Our refrigerator was the 1st to go,then the top of the line beautiful Monogram dishwasher. We had the GE repairman out multiple times with problems and never did it clean the dishes properly. I was shocked at how bad of a job it did for how impressive it looked both inside and out. As far as I could tell the main problem is that the pump doesn't have the power to shoot the water with enough force to clean the dishes. One of the driving forces I have been told is the "energy efficient" rules that are being implemeted. However, we have since replaced the GE Monogram with a Miele Inspira 2180 and it works incredibly well. We never rinse our dishes - in fact Miele encourages you not to. Simply scrape off the large stuff and put it in. I love the racks in the Miele as well. They are expensive but we use our dishwasher all the time with our family of 6 and so we feel it is worth the investment.

We have now had our GE Front Loader Washing Machine go out after 3.5 years in service. We started having problems with the bad moldy smells after about 6 months.

Guess what I did tonight. Removed all the food from my GE Arctica sxs fridge, bag it up and set it outside. Thank goodness for the frigid temps we're having in Texas. Sixteen for a low tonight, 25 for a high tomorrow. My 2002 fridge stopped working today :( If we hadn't just bought a new $39,000 car this week (which is housing the refrigerated items :o), I'd be jumping up and down excited at buying a new fridge. Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's something minor and not too spendy to fix. If I do have to replace it, it won't be a GE!
Monica (who's grateful she didn't make it to the grocery store today!)

I'm with you -- but then I have the same thing to say about Kitchen Aid. I've had to replace or repair just about every expensive appliance I bought since renovating the kitchen five years ago -- and all were just a month or so out of warranty. Shoddy manufacturing all around.

If you avoid every brand that ever had a problem, there would be nothing to buy, whether it's an appliance, a car, a tool, a doctor, a lawyer or a politician or a pro golfer

Sorry to hear about your fridge, Monica! 25 degrees would be a HEAT WAVE here in Nebraska. We are at -11 degrees, with wind chill temps dropping anywhere from -25 to -50. At least this is the time for your fride to go out! How old is it?? Keep us updated, and good luck with the repair!

I am a GE employee (not in their appliances division, but in their transportation division). So, I get employee discount through their online store. I cannot tell you the prices, but I get good deals and the 4 year extended warranty is $99 (starts after manufacturer warranty - just like what you got).

I am not loyal to GE in terms of purchases but I got a good deal and have not had any problems with any of the appliances that I have bought. The monogram ones have not been delivered yet. Hopefully I won't have problems with them either.

This probably doesn't apply, but mayber 10-15 yrs ago my in-laws had problems with appliances breaking. Can't remember why, but the power company came out and found that the transformer(?)wasn't regulating the electrical flow to the house. They were getting a higher amt and it was burning out the appliances. I know I don't have the terminology for this but I think you will understand what I am telling you. Good Luck!

watch on your 4 year warranty, read it carefully...if they choose NOT to fix but merely swap out your item with a new or recondition one....your warranty is over! In other words it may only last a year! At least thats how my Best Buy one reads. The only place that really covers you for 'x' number of years is Sears, and yes they charge more for what they now term as insurance not extended coevrage.

I had my first real time experience with one of these warranties with a cell phone my son bought that had a 90 day warranty. My wife bought a 1 year contract for about $20. Well after about 4 months the power suppy (charger) died. They wanted to just give him a new phone and charger. Well that in turn would negate the remaining 6 months of coverage on the phone since it was being repalced and we'd have to spend another $20 for a new warranty. Couple this with the fact that it was a Virgin Mobile phone that has no sim card so all his data/numbers etc would be lost. I argued and was able to get just the charger replaced and my coverage continues.

monicakm, be glad that it's your refrigerator that stopped working & not your furnace, LOL. That's what happened to us New Years Eve & the following 4 days, the highs only hovered around freezing!

My refrigerator also stopped working (was a Whirlpool but in all fairness was about 17 years of age) a few years ago when I quickly went out and bought an LG French Door Refrigerator. I wish I went with the no water on the door and the counter depth one which is my only complaint but other than that, so far it has been working well in the three years I have had it. Monicakm, I am so sorry about your refrigerator. Please keep us updated.

antiquesilver, My furnace, air conditioner and compressor died last year during a hot heat waive and that is the worst since it cost me $8100 which was the best price I found for quality but Seer level at the minimum.
