Maybe using a mosaic with carrera and some other stone might be more interesting. I think subway might look dated in a few years, and having a bit of texture or other color might be nice. I used a basketweave pattern of marble with a darker taupe-y square, and it looks great.

I do like the idea of the basket weave mosaic. Here is lovely example.

Hi oceanaver, you could do a white backsplash with a unique finish, like this first image of white tiles with an iridescent sheen. They'll reflect light and add another texture of interest. You could also do a light to medium grey subway tile. Here are some examples of varying sizes/layouts/colors (you will of course need to bring home samples to make sure it's the right tone for your kitchen). This could be a great option because it's very classic but updated with the grey instead of white, and will break up all the white in your kitchen. We have glossy and matte finishes, depending on what you like. Laying the tile so it's vertical in a running brick formation would also add something unique to your kitchen but still keep a classic look. Not to mention, tiles laid vertically will make the room appear taller!

Definitely like the basketweave mosaic. Also, i think the cabinet and drawer knobs should be changed - that in itself will make a huge difference

I love the basketweave that michigammnemom provided. Another option may be a split face tile that contains carrera.

Have you considered a ledgestone look? They are interlocking 'tiles' with no grout lines. The kitchen design needs color integrated into it. I would have made the countertop darker than everything else, that creates contrast.

Iridescent Ovals or Gold Rush Squares from DM Decos by Design would be wonderful in your kitchen. I think that picking up on the earth tones is a great idea, and paying special attention to the copper look of your knobs could add some warm interest. The Gold Rush Squares are pictured below and I think they give just enough interest to update the space and make it feel comforting.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and photos, I loved looking at all of them. The one thing that I didnt show was my large collection of colorful antique majolica that brings in great color, so the space has a lot of interesting color as well. I wanted to showcase the collection in the kitchen, so I didnt want anything to clash with it. But I do love the idea of a mosaic in carrera and another color...so thanks again!
