Boy needs a Hood

After many months of planning, analyzing and agonizing over our kitchen renovation project we are still stuck with some open questions. So I turn to you who have had a great deal of experience with these issues.

First question: Which Hood to get?

I am planning to install a 48" Capital Culinarian range top with a Char Broiler and 6 open burners. As such, I want to get as much power as possible/necessary to keep the fumes our of the rest of the house.

The rangetop will be mounted in a Peninsula layout so I need an 54" island hood. I've been looking into Vent-A-Hood, ModernAire, Imperial, and Futuro Futuro. Basically looking for a minimum of 1200 CFM, more if possible. Also our design style is more modern feel and we are looking for Slab Style cabinets (more on that in another post).

Anyone have any experience with Imperial or Futuro? I've read many posts on VAH and ModernAire.

What is the best "bang for the buck" with strong performance?

I can't speak to quality as I don't yet have ours but our style sounds very similar. I have a quote for a custom Modernaire hood in both 54w and 66w x 50h x 27d as we are still deciding between 48 and 60" ranges (CC too). I worked with Eurostoves to get a custom quote.

    Inspiration:

From my research, they make a great hood. Positive feedback and reccommendations.

That is an awesome picture Michelle.

I would also vote Modernaire and VAH.

I would encourage you to explore other locations for your range top. Venting something so large and powerful is already difficult enough without having the added burden of needing an island hood. At least with a wall hood, you have the back wall to help direct the effluent into the hood. With an island hood, you need more power and more capture area to do the same job. That will equal more noise as well as makeup air.

Green is right on with that opinion.

As for overall question from OP: this Forum is chock full of great threads about ventilation that will answer almost any question you'd have. Take a few minutes and look them over. One easy way is to search for threads on ventilation where kaseki has posted, as he's the font of knowledge here. A couple to start with:

    help please with ventilation

vent hoods and noise, the real scoop

The latter explains why I dislike VAH hoods so intensely. For someone like Anthony to vote for MA and VAH to me is like supporting "Obama or Santorum." Don't make sense.

Thanks for the ideas so far.
@GreenDesigns - Unfortunately one of the only key requirements I had is to not put the stove on the wall. I want to be able to interract with guests and not have the back to them. Whenever, people are over everyone stays in the kitchen and hovers around the stove and island.

My idea is to have the stove and a raised counter behind it with a seating area.

@clinresga - I've been looking around and have not seen any info on the other 2 companies I mentioned - Imperial and Futuro. If the MA works like Obama then clearly that would not at all be effective and would have to rule that option out ; - )

Read the posts referenced....I think he is saying that he would not get a VAH again and is quite happy with his MA.

Some additional thoughts on VAH or MA....

Here is a link that might be useful: VAH or MA

Only 10% of kitchen time is actually applying fire to food. 70% of the time you spend in a kitchen is doing prep. It makes more functional sense if you want to interact with your guests to make an island or peninsula the prep zone, not the cooking zone. Or, if you put your cleanup sink on an island, and use it for both cleanup and prep zones, then 90% of your time will be spent facing outwards towards guests.
